Set in an era of the abysmal living conditions of the Jamaican labouring class, the story "Don Rasta" is based on a young man’s struggle to get out of the racially prejudice and oppressive working class system; produced by the social and economic conditions of urban poverty and limited access to legitimate employment; which ultimately realizes the rise of the “DON”
Typically Jamaica’s lower class communities in and around the Kingston and metropolitan areas are common to “dons”, created by the system of abject poverty, coupled with a divisive and partisan political culture. The “Jamaican don” is a unique figure, who is said to provide some social benefits to the community, have a perverse legitimacy, respect, social prestige but, most of all, one who is deeply feared.
However, the story of “Don Rasta” sees the Conscious “revalution” of a “Don” initiated with the birth of a Black Nationalist movement used as a socio-economic and political tool for the general uplift of poor black people in the city, encouraging: social equality, self-reliance, entrepreneurship and financial independence, the protection of workers’ rights and interests, community development and nationhood.
Thus to the world a Revolutionist was born, a movement created, and a man became known as “Don Rasta”
